COURSE TASKS (GRADED AND NOT GRADED) FOR MATH 116 HYBRID
We will utilize MyOpenMath (MOM) for ALL tasks! The Gradebook will also be in MyOpenMath!
There are eight (8) types of tasks for you to complete, some are graded and some are not graded. They consist of (a) studying the Course Syllabus and the Tentative Course Schedule; (b) writing and posting an Autobiography; (c) completing a Syllabus Review; (d) completing the ProctorU Practice Exam; (e) studying the Learning Materials; (f) completing Practice Tasks; (g) completing Module Reviews; (h) taking Module Quizzes; and (i) taking a proctored Final Exam.
a. Study the Course Syllabus and the Tentative Course Schedule.
You can find a copy of these two documents in CANVAS and in MyOpenMath.
b. Write and post an Autobiography
You MUST write and post an Autobiography in the MyOpenMath "Autobiography" forum during the first week of the semester. You can find the Autobiography instructions in MyOpenMath in "Tasks Folder 1". Its grade will NOT be included in the course grade calculation.
NOTE: After you have written and posted your Autobiography, you must wait until the instructor sends you a password in her "Hello" message so that you can access the Syllabus Review. Check for a MyOpenMath private message. You might have to wait up to 24 hours.
c. Complete the Syllabus Review
You must complete a Syllabus Review to test your knowledge of the course workings, rules, and policies. You can find the Syllabus Review in MyOpenMath in "Tasks Folder 1". You must complete it during the first week of the semester. Its grade will NOT be included in the course grade calculation.
NOTE: You must have completed the Syllabus Review with a 100% before you can access the ProctorU Practice Exam and the Module Quizzes.
d. Complete the ProctorU Practice Exam
If you wish, you can take the Final Exam with the online proctoring service called ProctorU. However, you can also take it at a CSN Testing Center.
In any case, you must take a ProctorU Practice Exam with the online proctoring service called ProctorU during the first week of the semester. It contains no math! It must be completed to avoid "disasters" should you decide to take the Final Exam with ProctorU. You can find the ProctorU Practice Exam in "Tasks Folder 1" of MyOpenMath. Its grade will NOT be included in the course grade calculation.
For more ProctorU information, go to https://profstewartmath.com/General/FAQ_ProctorU_Process.html (also on the CANVAS Course Home Page)
NOTE: You must have completed the ProctorU Practice Exam with a 100% before you can access Practice 1.
e. Study the Learning Materials
The MOM course is divided into three (3) learning modules. Every week contains several folders each containing a "Learning Materials" link. There you will find typed instructor notes explaining the concepts and examples, YouTube videos and eTexts were written by various other mathematics instructors from other institutions.
The primary source of learning are the instructor notes and examples and some YouTube videos. Unless directed otherwise, you are to assume every example in the instructor's notes and "Examples" documents should be reworked. Or, at the very least, you should do enough of them so that you understand the concepts. The secondary source of learning are the eTexts. ONLY if you are not satisfied with the instructor's notes should you consult them.
NOTE: The eTexts contain a huge amount of materials and not everything pertains to this course. The instructor lecture notes will tell you what to concentrate on and what to ignore. Please understand that the formulas and solution paths in the eTexts might be slightly different from the ones in the instructor lecture notes. This is the nature of mathematics, and these differences teach you critical thinking skills.
