We will utilize MyOpenMath (MOM) for ALL graded and non-graded tasks! The Gradebook will also be in MyOpenMath!

There are seven (7) types of tasks for you to complete, namely (a) write an Autobiography; (b) complete the Syllabus Review; (c) study the Learning Materials; (d) complete the graded Practice Problem Sets; (e) complete the Module Reviews; (f) take the graded Module Quizzes; and (g) take the graded, proctored Midterm and Final Exams.

a. Write an Autobiography - Not Graded (but necessary for continued success)

It requires you to introduce yourself to the class in a MyOpenMath forum called “Autobiography”. You can find the task in MOM in the "Preliminaries" Tasks Folder.

WARNING: You must have completed the Autobiography Task with a 100% before you can access the syllabus review and other course materials.

b. Complete the Syllabus Review - Not Graded (but necessary for continued success)

The syllabus review tests your knowledge of the course workings, rules, and policies. It is protected by a password which will be given to you by the instructor in the response to your autobiography posting. You can find the syllabus review in MOM in the "Preliminaries" folder.

WARNING: You must have completed the Syllabus Review with a 100% before you can access Practice 1PRE, the Module Quizzes, and the Final Exam.

c. Study the Learning Materials - Not Graded (but necessary for continued success)

The MOM course is divided into four (4) learning modules of four weeks each. Every week contains several folders each containing a "Learning Materials" link. There you will find typed instructor notes explaining the concepts and examples, YouTube videos, and eTexts were written by various other mathematics instructors from other institutions.

The primary source of learning are the instructor notes and examples, and the YouTube videos. Unless directed otherwise, you are to assume every example should be reworked. Or, at the very least, you should do enough of them so that you understand the corresponding concepts. These examples are there for your benefit, but they will not be submitted for grading.

The secondary source of learning are the eTexts were written by various other mathematics instructors from other institutions. ONLY if you are not satisfied with the instructor's notes should you consult the eTexts.

NOTE: The eTexts contain a huge amount of materials and not everything pertains to this course. The instructor lecture notes will tell you what to concentrate on and what to ignore. Please understand that the formulas and solution paths in the eTexts might be slightly different from the ones in the instructor lecture notes. This is the nature of mathematics, and these differences teach you critical thinking skills.

d. Complete the Practice Problem Sets - Graded

There are thirty-six (36) practice problem sets. They are concept-related and prepare you for the Module Quizzes and the Midterm and Final Exams. The average of the grades of all practice problem sets counts for 30% of your course grade.

Practice 1PRE requires a 100% on the Syllabus Review.

Thereafter, you must achieve at least a 75% on the previous practice problem set before you can access the following one.

Practices 6 and 17a require you to complete the Module 1 Quiz and the Module 3 Quiz, respectively with at least a 1%.

Practice 11a requires you to complete the Midterm Exam with at least a 1%.

Practice 9PRE is password protected. You will get the password from the instructor as soon as you tell her the date and time of your Proctored Midterm and Final Exam appointments with one of the CSN Testing Centers.

e. Complete the Module Reviews - Not Graded (but necessary for continued success)

The module reviews let you know what types of problems to expect on the module quizzes! You can find the module reviews in MOM in Tasks Folders 4, 9, and 14. For availability check Dr. Stewart's Tentative Course Schedule. You can find a (brown) button on the Canvas Course Home Page.

WARNING: If you want to take advantage of the reviews, you must have earned at least a 75% on the previous practice task before you can access them.

f. Take the Module Quizzes - Graded

There are four (4) module quizzes, one at the end of each of the four learning modules. The average of ALL module quiz grades counts for 30% of your course grade.

The Module Quizzes require a 100% on the Syllabus Review.

g. Take the Comprehensive Midterm Exam and the Final Exam - Graded and Proctored!

There is a proctored Midterm Exam and a proctored Final Exam. The Midterm Exam grade counts for 20% of your course grade and the Final Exam grade counts for 20% of your course grade. The Midterm Exam consists of problems taken from the Module 1 and 2 Quizzes. The Final Exam consists of problems taken from the Module 1, 2, 3, and 4 Quizzes.

You must take the Midterm and Final Exams at one of the CSN Testing Centers. If traveling to a campus is not possible, you must discuss other options with the instructor at least ONE WEEK prior to the start of the Midterm and Final Exam availability periods. If you are registered with the CSN Disability Resource Center and you want to take the Midterm and Final Exams in their facilities, you must discuss this with the instructor.

The Midterm and Final Exams are password protected, and the proctor will input the password for you. You can find the Midterm Exam in the MOM "Tasks Folder 8" and the Final Exam in the MOM "Tasks Folder 16".

The Final Exam requires a 100% on the Syllabus Review.
