1. ABOUT THIS ONLINE COURSE

You have elected to take Math 116 in an "Online" environment using CANVAS and MyOpenMath. See paragraph #7 for more information on CANVAS and MyOpenMath.

You will NOT receive LIVE instruction. The bulk of learning the concepts will fall on your shoulders. You primarily learn by READING the concepts and examples in the instructor's lecture notes. For a different perspective, you can also access available eTexts and YouTube videos. This does not mean that the instructor is absent. She will monitor your progress and will, if necessary, make private comments if you seem to be falling behind. The instructor will address ALL questions and concerns you might have.

NOTE: If you signed up for this course, but you actually work during the LIVE instructions, it is strongly suggested that you drop this course and find an evening course that fits your work schedule.  There is even a Saturday course.

In this Online course, you are not allowed to do whatever you want.

Successful online courses have structure and purpose. You must adhere to deadlines and due dates just like in an on-campus course. See paragraph #3 "Tentative Course Schedule."

In this Online course, you must have the appropriate technology and be tech-savvy.

Technical difficulties cannot be used as an excuse for failure to complete tasks. It is your responsibility to locate the computer hardware, software, and internet connections necessary to stay connected and current with your course work and course requirements.

In this Online course, you must exhibit appropriate behaviors in person and in writing.

Strive for a personable tone! Do not make offensive or disparaging remarks. Please familiarize yourself with the CSN Disruptive and Abusive Student Policy and the Student Conduct Code.

In this course, you must take a proctored Final Exam with the online proctoring service called ProctorU or at one of the CSN Testing Centers.

3. COURSE SCHEDULE

The Course Schedule allows you to quickly check the availability of tasks and their due dates. It is also a guide of how to proceed through the course for optimum success. Make a hard copy and keep it next to your workspace.

NOTE: The instructor reserves the right to modify the course schedule at any time with written, electronic, or verbal notification. It is the students' responsibility to be aware of the changes made. Please understand that all times in the Course Schedule are considered to be Pacific Standard Time.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Concepts that will allow students to become proficient in the mathematics used in technical fields are the focal point of this course. Topics include fundamental operations with signed numbers; measurement systems; exponents; order of operations; scientific notation; algebraic expressions; linear equations and inequalities; an introduction to graphing; simple geometric figures, logarithms; and fundamentals of trigonometry. Prerequisites and Corequisites: None

• Convert between the U.S. Customary and Metric systems of measurement.

11. ATTENDANCE - VERY IMPORTANT

As per CSN policy, you must prove that you are a legitimate student in the course. In this course, the proof consists of the following:

Complete the Syllabus Review in MyOpenMath during the first week of the semester. You can find it in MyOpenMath. Open the Tasks Folder 1 and then access the "Preliminary Tasks" sub-folder.

If you do not comply with this requirement, the instructor MUST report you to the CSN Registrar who may administratively withdraw you from the course.

Aside from the above requirement, you MUST access MyOpenMath "Messages" and the MyOpenMath Forums daily to read new posts and messages. You are responsible for any grade ramifications if you do not attend the course as described.

12. DUE DATES

ALL graded tasks (practice sets, module reviews, module quizzes) are supposed to be done by the yellow due date/time (Nevada time zone) shown in the Course Schedule. However, the instructor gives “Late Passes” for the practice sets only.

NOTE: Unfortunately, our learning management system "MyOpenMath" only allows one due date. Therefore, the instructor uses the "Late Pass" period for the practice sets (homework) and not the official due dates! Please be aware, that if you utilize the "Late Pass" period, it is still your responsibility to be mindful of the day it ends.

13. POLICY ON MAKING UP TASK

NO graded tasks will be accepted AFTER the due dates stated in the Tentative Course Schedule! After the due date (quizzes and final exam) or the "Late Pass" period (practice sets), you will be given a grade of 0% for ALL non-submitted graded tasks. No make-up is possible.

Why? It is all about "fairness"! Students who are allowed to make up graded tasks have a longer study time, can potentially get a "peek" at a friend's graded task, and may experience less stress should multiple task be due due on the same day.

14. POLICY ON RETAKES OF TASKS

NO retakes of practice tasks, module reviews, and module quizzes will be allowed after their availability period. Final exams may not be retaken.

15. POLICY ON EXTRA CREDIT TASKS

NO extra credit tasks will be made available.

16. POLICY ON DROPPING GRADES

NO grades will be dropped.

17. POLICY ON TECHNICAL ISSUES

YOU CANNOT CLAIM "TECHNICAL ISSUES" after the due date of any graded task! Therefore, do one of the following:

If you are working on an online, unproctored, graded task and you encounter technical issues, contact the instructor immediately. If it is still possible, the instructor will try to fix the issue. Be mindful of the time of day and the instructor's availability! If you are working on an online Module Quiz, and the technical issue happens on the third (and last) attempt, there is NO recourse.

If you are working on the online, proctored Final Exam and you encounter technical issues, insist that the proctor contacts the instructor immediately. Do not take "NO" for an answer. You might have to ask for the supervisor. DO NOT exist the exam! STAY AT YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL THE INSTRUCTOR RESPONDS.

18. POLICY ON CONFLICT RESOLUTTION

If you have concerns with course scheduling, course materials, grading, etc., you must contact the instructor first before you talk to anyone else.

a. Grading Scale

Following is the grading scale used by the instructor for all graded tasks and the course grade:

100 - 93 A       92 - 90 A-    

  89 - 83 B       82 - 80 B-    

  79 - 73 C       72 - 70 C-     

  69 - 63 D       62 - 60 D-    

  59 -   0 F

     b. Course Grade Calculation

It is expected that you know how to calculate your course grade at any given time during the semester. The following formula will be used:

0.15 * (Final Exam Grade) + 0.15 * (Avg of ALL Module Reviews) + 0.40 * (Avg of ALL Module Quizzes) + 0.30 * (Avg of ALL Practice Tasks)

Avg means Average. This is the points you earned divided by all points possible.

NOTE: Please understand that your course grade is calculated using the point system and not the percent system. I will round up to a whole number if the decimal is 5 or higher.

20. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

You are expected to complete your own work in this class. Cheating on graded tasks is not fair to students who are honestly studying. Cheating is also subject to penalties, which can include getting a 0 for the exam or failing the course. The full list of possible penalties is listed in the Student Academic Integrity Policy. You must familiarize yourself with this policy.

Practice Problem Sets and Module Reviews: If it can be proven that someone else completed a practice problem set or a module review for you, you will get a 0. While tutors may explain math concepts to you, they are NOT allowed to work individual problems for you.

Module Quizzes and Final Exam: If it can be proven that someone else completed a module quiz or the final exam for you, you will get a 0. Additionally, if it can be proven that you used outside resources on the module quizzes and the final exam (textbook, instructor notes, your notes, Web sites, artificial intelligence, etc.), you will also get a 0!

21. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) USAGE

Any use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) is strictly prohibited for all assignments, exams, and projects in this course. All work must be completed independently, without AI assistance at any stage, from initial planning to final submission. Suspected use of generative AI will be investigated as a violation of CSN’s Academic Integrity policy under the definition of 'cheating,' specifically ‘receiving aid not permitted by the instructor.’ Potential consequences may include a warning, grade reduction, course failure, or academic probation, depending on the severity of the violation.

29. SAFETY PROCEDURES

Should you need to use a classroom, approved classroom safety procedures are posted in each classroom and are to be followed. Students are to familiarize themselves with the nearest exit to use during fire alarm exercises. Do NOT use the elevators during these drills. Students will take ALL personal belongings with them when exiting the building. No student will be allowed back into the facility until the all clear is given.
