MEDIA & TOOLS FOR MATH 116

a. Canvas - Required

We will use the free Canvas as our "Course Organization System". It will become available to the students on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Canvas allows for quick and easy access to all course tools, course rules and policies, and helpful hints.

Telephone Support for Distance Education students having problems logging into a course, using course website tools, or other technical problems can be found by contacting the CSN Technology Help Desk locally at 702-651-4357 or via 1-800-630-7563 toll-free, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

b. MyOpenMath (aka MOM) - Required

We will use the free MyOpenMathas our "Math Learning System". It will become available to the students on Sunday, January 19, 2025. MOM contains online textbooks, the instructor-created lecture notes, assorted YouTube videos, homework assignments, exams, asynchronous communication tools, and much more. NOTE: The Gradebook will also be in MOM.

c. Zoom - Optional, but highly recommended!

The free-of-charge software-based conference room called Zoom will be used should you want to talk to the instructor face-to-face. Please make an appointment with the instructor and then download the "Zoom Client for Meetings" at https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting. For Zoom technology support plase contact the instructor.

d. Laptop or Standalone Computer - Required

Please note, that the applications we use DO NOT WORK with Chromebooks, Mobile Devices, Tablets/iPads, Linux/Unix OS, or MS Surface RT. If necessary, YOU MUST make arrangements to take ALL graded tasks on a laptop or standalone computer.

e. Google Chrome - Required

The best browser to use is Google Chrome even for Mac users. Most application we use do not always work together well with other browsers.

f. Webcam and Microphone - Optional, but highly recommended!

Should you want to communicate with the instructor face-to-face, you must have access to a Webcam (stand-alone or build into our computer) and a microphone.

g. Scanning Capability - Optional, but highly recommended

You must have a scanner or a cell phone scanner app (e.g., Adobe Scan) to send required work to the instructor. You must know how to create pdf files.

h. Calculator - Required

A calculator is necessary in this course! It MUST be any physical scientific or graphing calculator with physical buttons.  You cannot use a cellphone or smart watch calculator app or an online calculator (e.g. Desmos) on exams.  Be sure to use a calculator with "forward logic". The TI 30X IIB or IIS or the TI 30XS MultiView scientific calculators are recommended.  

You can use the calculator for the practice tasks, the quizzes, and the Final Exam**.  Be sure to use the same calculator for all your work!

**NOTE: The Final Exam is proctored.  You must bring your own physical calculator to the exam location!

i. Instructor Lecture Notes - Required

The instructor lecture notes can be found in MOM. The MOM course is divided into three (3) modules of five weeks each. Every week contains several folders each containing a "Learning Materials" link. There you will find written instructor notes explaining the concepts.

j. YouTube Videos - Required

Under the "Learning Materials" links you can also find YouTube videos recorded by various mathematics instructors from other institutions showing more examples of how to work problems.

k. Hardcover Textbook - Optional

You do not have to purchase a hardcover textbook. You can find eText links under each "Learning Materials" link in the MOM Tasks Folders. These eTexts were written by various other mathematics instructors from other institutions. ONLY if you are not satisfied with the instructor's notes should you consult the eTexts.
