MATH 127 SECTION 1017 - PRECALCULUS II

2. COURSE CALENDAR

You can find the course calendar at http://profstewartmath.com/Cal_WR-PU_Fall.pdf and also on the home page of MyOpenMath (MOM) which will be discussed in paragraph 7.a below. It allows you to quickly check assignment availability and due dates.

3. ABOUT THIS WEB-REMOTE COURSE

In this web-remote course you will receive direct instruction via Zoom. Everyone attends a Live Zoom lecture session at the same time two times a week. Web-remote courses were designed for students who crave the “feel” of being in a live classroom, but do not want to drive to campus. Paragraph 7 below tells you how to access Zoom.

In this web-remote course you must have the appropriate technology and be tech-savvy. It is ENTIRELY UP TO THE STUDENTS to have this under control. This should happen by the second day of the semester. This course makes extensive use of multiple forms of media and requires specific software and hardware components. See paragraph 7 below. Access to a desktop or laptop computer and a fast internet connection is essential.

In this web-remote course you must exhibit appropriate behaviors in person and in writing. Strive for a personable, professional, and business-like tone! Do not make angry, critical, offensive, or disparaging remarks. Please familiarize yourself with the CSN Disruptive and Abusive Student Policy and the Student Conduct Code.

In this web-remote course you must take your exams in a proctored online environment. We will be using ProctorU, an online service subscribed to by CSN. Its proctors will monitor you remotely while you take the exams on your computer from home. Please note, ProctorU does not support Chromebooks, cellphones, Tablets/iPads, MS Surface RT, and similar devices. If necessary, YOU MUST make arrangements to take your exams on an approved device. 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Topics include an in-depth investigation of trigonometric functions and their graphs, analytic trigonometry, solutions of triangles, vectors, and analytic geometry.

Prerequisite: MATH 126 with a grade of C or better; or a satisfactory ACT/SAT/Placement Test score. Note: This course is essential for students planning to take calculus

7. MEDIA AND TOOLS

a. MyOpenMath (aka MOM) - Required

The free-of-charge Learning Management System called MyOpenMath or MOM will be used exclusively in this course. CANVAS and MyMathLab will NOT be used! In essence, MOM is our online classroom. It contains online textbooks, the instructor-created text-based lecture notes, assorted YouTube videos, the syllabus, the syllabus supplement, the course calendar, homework assignments, quizzes, exams, grades, asynchronous communication tools, and much more.

NOTE:  You should be able to access the MOM course a few days before the start of the semester! Thereafter, if you are having trouble with access, e-mail your instructor immediately.

b. Zoom - Required

The free-of-charge software-based conference room called Zoom will be used for our class meeting and for “office” hours. Download the "Zoom Client for Meetings" at https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting.

c. ProctorU - Required

We will be using ProctorU, an online service, that monitors you while you take the exams on your computer from home. You will access ProctorU at https://go.proctoru.com.

Please note, ProctorU does not support Chromebooks, cellphones, Tablets/iPads, MS Surface RT. If necessary, YOU MUST make arrangements to take your exams on an approved device. OTHERWISE SWITCH TO AN ON-CAMPUS COURSE.

A valid, unexpired Government-issued picture ID (drivers license, passport) is required for testing. You will not be tested without one! You must also take your exams in a location in which you cannot be interrupted. The proctoring staff will stop testing if any individual walks into your testing space!

d. Laptop or Standalone Computer - Required

Please note, that the applications we use DO NOT WORK with Chromebooks, Mobile Devices, Tablets/iPads, Linux/Unix OS, or MS Surface RT. If necessary, YOU MUST make arrangements to take your exams and complete assignments on a laptop or standalone computer.

e. Google Chrome - Required

The best browser to use is Google Chrome even for Mac users. Most application we use do not always work together well with other browsers.

f. Wired Internet Connection - Optional, but highly recommended!

You may experience difficulties in the stability of your Internet connection, even with the best wireless connection. The extra load of the ProctorU monitoring software on your computing device might slow things down and might make it difficult for images and charts to load and to save answers to your exam questions. If you do not have an Ethernet cable buy one and learn how to use it before your first exam.

g. Webcam, Microphone, and Scanner - Required

You must have access to a Webcam (stand-alone or build into our computer) and a microphone so that you can communicate adequately with the instructor.  You must also have a scanner or a cell phone scanner app (e.g., Adobe Scan) so that you can send certain work to the instructor.

h. Calculator - Required

A calculator is necessary in this course! You can use it for the practice tasks, the quizzes, and the exams. The make and model are your choice. However, be sure to get one that uses "forward logic". The Texas Instrument TI 30XS Multiview calculator is strongly recommended. Be sure to use the same calculator for all of your work!

i. Instructor Lecture Notes - Required

The instructor lecture notes can be found in MOM. The MOM course is divided into four (4) modules subdivided into four weeks each. Every week contains several folders each containing a "Learning Materials" link. The first thing you should do before you attempt a Practice Task (see paragraph 9.d below) is read your own notes taken in a paper notebook during the live Zoom session. If necessary, read the instructor's lecture notes and rework the examples.

j. YouTube Videos - Optional

You can find YouTube videos showing more examples of how to work problems in every week of each MOM module under the "Learning Materials" links.

k. Hardcover Textbook - Optional

You do not have to purchase a hardcover textbook. You can find eText links in every week of each MOM module under the "Learning Materials" links. The instructor lecture notes will tell you which concepts to concentrate on and which to ignore. ONLY if you are not satisfied with the instructor's notes should you consult the eTexts under the heading "Secondary Learning Materials".  The instructor's notes will tell you which eText concepts to concentrate on and which to ignore.  

WARNING: Formulas and solution paths most likely will differ slightly between the instructor lecture notes and the eTexts. This is the nature of mathematics, and these differences teach you critical thinkg skills.

8. HOW WILL COMMUNICATION AND COURSE HELP TAKE PLACE

The instructor will communicate in several different ways.

9. ASSIGNMENTS

There are five types of assignments in this course, namely (a) Autobiography Task; (b) Quizzes; (c) Exams; (d) Practice Tasks; and (e) Capstone Task. You can find their starting dates and their due dates in the Course Calendar. See paragraph #2 above.

a. Autobiography Task

There is a non-graded Autobiography Task that requires you to introduce yourself to the class on a MOM bulletin board called “Autobiography Forum”. You will find more information in the "Prelininaries" task folder in the MOM course.

You must achieve a 100% on the Autobiography Task before you can access the Syllabus Quiz (see below). A password will be given to you by the instructor in the response to your posting.

b. Quizzes

There are four (4) graded Concept Quizzes called Concept Quiz 1, Concept Quiz 2, Concept Quiz 3, and Concept Quiz 4. NO partial credit will be possible. The average of all Concept Quiz grades counts for 30% of your course grade. There is also a non-graded graded Syllabus Quiz testing your general course knowledge.

c. Exams

You must take your exams in a proctored ONLINE environment. We will be using ProctorU, an online service, that monitors you while you take the exams on your computer from home. A college and its instructors must uphold ethical standards and know who is actually taking the exams.

There are four (4) graded exams called Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3, and Exam 4. Partial credit might be possible if certain procedures are followed. This will be discussed in more detail before and after each exam. The average of all exam grades including the Capstone Task (see below) counts for 40% of your course grade.

There is also a non-graded ProctorU Practice Exam. Should you decide not to take the ProctorU Practice Exam and then cannot take the graded exams due to ProctorU difficulties, you will get a 0% on them.

d. Practice Tasks

There are twenty-two (22) graded Practice Tasks. They are concept-related and prepare you for the quizzes and the exams. The average of all Practice Task grades counts for 30% of your course grade.

e. Capstone Task

There is a graded Capstone Task. It is a comprehensive review of Practices 1 through 22. It will be counted as an exam (see above), but it will be similar to a Practice Task. It will NOT be proctored by ProctorU.

10. EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

NO extra credit assignments are available.

11. DUE DATES

All assignments have soft and hard due dates. See Course Calendar. It is expected that ALL assignments be completed by the soft due dates. The soft due dates were created to keep you on track.

However, you have some leeway ... namely the hard due dates which allow for potential little hiccups in your life. They should ONLY be used in emergency situations. Please understand that each hard due date is considered to be the "make up" day. You will not get a chance to make up assignments AFTER the hard due dates.

Be aware that MOM cannot show soft due dates. It will always show the hard due dates. Therefore, rely heavily on the Course Calendar for ALL due dates. It should be prominently displayed within your work space.

12. COURSE POLICY ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKEUP WORK

Some of the top job skills that will help individuals succeed in any industry are multitasking, professionalism, and integrity. Multitasking includes the ability to focus on one task without neglecting your other duties. Professionalism includes timeliness, politeness, and organization among many other habits and attitudes. Being professional requires individuals to self-motivate and hold themselves accountable for their actions without needing oversight from a manager. Professionalism can be a good indicator that an employee will perform well at their job, so it is a necessary skill for anyone looking to succeed in their career, regardless of their field of work. Therefore, many professors feel that course grades should also reflect students’ professionalism and multitasking skills.

Consequently, the following policy on late assignments and makeup assignments pertains to this course:

NO late assignments and NO make-up assignments will be allowed AFTER the due dates as stated in the Course Calendar! After the due date, you will be given a grade of 0% for missed assignments.

13. Grading

a. Grading Scale

Following is the grading scale used by the instructor for all assignments and the course grade:

100 - 93 A       92 - 90 A-    

  89 - 83 B       82 - 80 B-    

  79 - 73 C       72 - 70 C-     

  69 - 63 D       62 - 60 D-    

  59 -   0 F

     b. Course Grade Calculation

It is expected that you know how to calculate your course grade at any given time during the semester. 

0.40 (Exams Avg) + 0.30 (Quiz Point Avg) + 0.30 (Practice Task Point Avg)

14. ATTENDANCE POLICY

In web-remote courses "attendance" means that you should attend the Zoom classroom at the regular scheduled time. You should also access the MOM course daily, if anything just to read new messages in the MOM forums and the MOM Message feature. You will get a notification on your myMOM page below the course access link when new messages are available. You are responsible for any grade ramifications if you do not attend the course as described.

15. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

You are expected to complete your own work in this class. Cheating on exams or lab exercises is not fair to students who are honestly studying. Cheating is also subject to penalties, which can include getting a zero for the exam or lab exercise or failing the course. The full list of possible penalties is listed in the CSN Student Academic Integrity Policy. You must familiarize yourself with this policy.

Practice Taks: If it can be proven that someone else completed one or more practice tasks for you, you will get a 0% for those assignments. While tutors may explain math concepts to you, they are NOT allowed to work individual problems for you.

Quizzes and Exams: If it can be proven that someone else completed one or more quizzes and/or exams for you, you will get a 0% for those assessments. Additionally, if it can be proven that you used outside resources on the exams (textbook, instructor notes, your notes, Web sites, etc.), you will also get a 0%!

19. MISCELLANEOUS

Students must follow all active CSN public health directives while enrolled in this class. CSN public health directives pertaining to the corona viruses are found at COVID19. Students who do not comply with these directives will be asked to leave the classroom. Refusal to follow the guidelines may result in further disciplinary action according to the Student Conduct Code including being dropped from the course.
