2. COURSE CALENDAR

You can find the course calendar at http://profstewartmath.com/Cal_127OL_Spring.pdf and also on the home page of MyOpenMath (MOM) which will be discussed in paragraph 7.a below. It allows you to quickly check assignment availability and due dates.

3. ABOUT THIS ONLINE COURSE

In this online course you will not receive direct instruction. You primarily learn by READING about the concepts in the instructor's lecture notes. For a different perspective, you can also access available eTexts and YouTube videos.

In this online course you are not allowed to do whatever you want. Successful online courses have structure and purpose. You must adhere to deadlines and due dates just like in an on-campus course. 

In this online course you must have the appropriate technology and be tech-savvy. It is ENTIRELY UP TO THE STUDENTS to have this under control. This should happen by the second day of the semester. This course makes extensive use of multiple forms of media and requires specific software and hardware components. See paragraph 7 below. Access to a desktop or laptop computer and a fast internet connection is essential.

In this online course you must exhibit appropriate behaviors in person and in writing. Strive for a personable tone! Do not make offensive or disparaging remarks. Please familiarize yourself with the CSN Disruptive and Abusive Student Policy and the Student Conduct Code.

In this web-remote course you must take your exams in a proctored online environment. For more information, see paragraphs 7c and 9c below.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Topics include an in-depth investigation of trigonometric functions and their graphs, analytic trigonometry, solutions of triangles, vectors, and analytic geometry. Prerequisites: MATH 126 or 126E with a grade of C or better; or a satisfactory ACT/SAT/Placement Test score. Note: This course is essential for students planning to take calculus.

7. MEDIA AND TOOLS

a. MyOpenMath (aka MOM) - Required

The free-of-charge Learning Management System called MyOpenMath or MOM will be used exclusively in this course. CANVAS and MyMathLab will NOT be used! In essence, MOM is our online classroom. It contains online textbooks, the instructor-created text-based lecture notes, assorted YouTube videos, the syllabus, the syllabus supplement, the course calendar, homework assignments, quizzes, exams, grades, asynchronous communication tools, and much more.

You will access MOM at https://www.myopenmath.com. For MOM registration information go to http://profstewartmath.com/General/myopenmath127OL.html.

NOTE:  You should be able to access the MOM course a few days before the start of the semester! Thereafter, if you are having trouble with access, e-mail your instructor immediately.

b. Zoom - Required

The free-of-charge software-based conference room called Zoom will be used for “office” hours. Download the "Zoom Client for Meetings" at https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting.

c. ProctorU - Optional

Please note that ProctorU does not support Chromebooks, cellphones, Tablets/iPads, MS Surface RT, and similar devices. If necessary, you must make arrangements to take your exams on an approved device or you must take your exams in one of the CSN Testing Centers.

d. Laptop or Standalone Computer - Required

Please note, that the applications we use DO NOT WORK with Chromebooks, Mobile Devices, Tablets/iPads, Linux/Unix OS, or MS Surface RT. If necessary, YOU MUST make arrangements to take your exams and complete assignments on a laptop or standalone computer.

e. Google Chrome - Required

The best browser to use is Google Chrome even for Mac users. Most application we use do not always work together well with other browsers.

f. Wired Internet Connection - Optional, but highly recommended!

You may experience difficulties in the stability of your Internet connection, even with the best wireless connection. The extra load of the ProctorU monitoring software on your computing device might slow things down and might make it difficult for images and charts to load and to save answers to your exam questions. If you do not have an Ethernet cable buy one and learn how to use it before your first exam.

g. Webcam, Microphone, and Scanner - Required

You must have access to a Webcam (stand-alone or build into our computer) and a microphone so that you can communicate adequately with the instructor. You must also have a scanner or a cell phone scanner app (e.g., Adobe Scan) so that you can send certain work to the instructor.

h. Calculator - Required

A calculator is necessary in this course! Be sure to use one with "forward logic". The TI 30X IIB or IIS or the TI 30XS Multiview scientific calculators are recommended. You can use it for the practice tasks, the Capstone Task, the quizzes, and Exams 2, 3, and 4. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE A CALCULATOR ON EXAM 1. Use the same calculator for all your work! Using a new calculator on an exam could be disastrous!

NOTE: On Exams 2, 3, and 4 you cannot use a computer, phone, or online calculator!

i. Instructor Lecture Notes/Videos - Required

The instructor lecture notes and videos can be found in MOM. The MOM course is divided into four (4) modules subdivided into four weeks each. Every week contains several folders each containing a "Learning Materials" link. There you will find the concepts explained.

j. YouTube Videos - Optional

You can find YouTube videos recorded by various mathematics instructors from other institutions showing more examples of how to work problems in every week of each MOM module under the "Learning Materials" links.

k. Hardcover Textbook - Optional

You do not have to purchase a hardcover textbook. You can find eText links under each "Learning Materials" folder in MOM. These eTexts were written by various other mathematics instructors from other institutions.

The instructor lecture notes will tell you which concepts to concentrate on and which to ignore. ONLY if you are not satisfied with the instructor's notes should you consult the eTexts under the heading "Secondary Learning Materials". The instructor's notes will tell you which eText concepts to concentrate on and which to ignore.

WARNING: Formulas and solution paths most likely will differ slightly between the instructor lecture notes and the eTexts. This is the nature of mathematics, and these differences teach you critical thinking skills.

8. COMMUNICATION AND COURSE HELP

The instructor will communicate in several different ways.

• Helpful hints and important course information will be posted in the MOM forum called General Communication.
• Math questions will be answered in the MOM forum called Math Questions or via the MOM "Messages" feature or via Zoom.
• Occasionally, the instructor will send private messages utilizing the MOM “Messages” feature.

You can discuss NON-MATH RELATED ISSUES (technology; share your concerns; report typos) in two different ways. The instructor will respond within 24-36 hours.

• Utilize the MOM forum called General Communication.
• If the issue is private, utilize the MOM "Messages" feature.

You can discuss MATH-RELATED ISSUES in several different ways:

• Talk to the instructor via Zoom video chat from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM pacific time Tuesdays and Thursdays except during the testing weeks. The Meeting ID is 86456515440 and the Password is office. At all other times, please set up an appointment via the MOM "Messages" feature or ingrid.stewart@csn.edu. Use “Zoom Appointment” in the subject line.
• Talk to the instructor via the MOM "Message" feature at any time. She will get back to you within 24-36 hours. Additionally, the instructor is working on her computer for sure from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM pacific time on Mondays and Wednesdays should you want a real-time written dialog. However, she is usually working on her courses every morning.
• Utilize the MOM “Math Questions” forum. Please tell us what you are having troubles with. Perhaps take a photo of your work and send it as an attachment to your request for help. Other students should have the opportunity to respond first. If the students as a collective can't answer the question, then the instructor help within 24-36 hours, Monday through Saturday.
• Contact the Centers for Academic Success (CAS) which provide quality DROP-IN academic assistance to all students enrolled in for-credit courses at CSN.

9. ASSIGNMENTS

There are five types of assignments in this course, namely (a) Autobiography Task; (b) Quizzes; (c) Exams; (d) Practice Tasks; and (e) Capstone Task. You can find their starting dates and their due dates in the Course Calendar. See paragraph #2 above.

a. Autobiography Task

The Autobiography Task is not graded. It requires you to introduce yourself to the class on a MOM bulletin board called “Autobiography Forum”. You will find more information in the "Preliminaries" tasks folder in the MOM course.

b. Quizzes

There are four (4) quizzes. Three (3) are graded and one (1) is not graded.

Graded: Concept Quiz 1, Concept Quiz 2, and Concept Quiz 3. NO partial credit will be possible. The average of all Concept Quiz grades counts for 20% of your course grade.

You must achieve at least a 75% on the previous practice task before you can access each concept quiz.

Not Graded: Syllabus Quiz testing your general course knowledge.

A password for the quiz will be given to you by the instructor in the response to your autobiography posting.

c. Exams

There are five (5) exams. Four (4) are graded and one (1) is not graded.

You must take your exams in a proctored environment. Therefore, all exams are password protected, and your proctor will input the password for you. You have two choices of proctoring locations: (1) using the free online proctoring service ProctorU or one of the CSN Testing Centers (no charge).

IMPORTANT: You must have an unexpired U.S. government-issued ID (DMV issued drivers' license, DMV issued identification card, passport).

Graded: Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3, and Exam 4. Partial credit might be possible if certain procedures are followed. This will be discussed in more detail before and after each exam. The average of all exam grades counts for 50% of your course grade.

Not-Graded: ProctorU Practice Exam. You must take this exam, even if you later decide to take the remaining exams at one of the CSN Testing Centers. If there are computer issues, the instructor must be contacted during the first week of the semester. Later contact may affect your ability to take an exam which may result in a grade of 0%.

d. Practice Tasks

There are twenty-two (22) graded Practice Tasks. They are concept-related and prepare you for the quizzes and the exams. The average of all Practice Task grades counts for 20% of your course grade.

Practice 1 requires a password found in the ProctorU Practice Exam and a 100% on the Syllabus Quiz.

Thereafter, you must achieve at least a 75% on the previous practice task before you can access the next practice task.

Practices 6, 12, and 18 require you to complete the previous exam with at least a 1%.

e. Capstone Task

There is a graded Capstone Task. It is a comprehensive review of Practices 1 through 22 and is handled like a Practice Task. It counts for 10% of your course grade. You can find the Capstone Task in the first tasks folder of the last module in the MOM course.

10. EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

NO extra credit assignments are available.

11. DUE DATES/TIMES

All assignments have soft and hard due dates and times. See Course Calendar. MyOpenMath will show hard due dates. They are to be used in emergency situations only. If you take advantage of the hard due dates/times, your work must be completed by the date/time as stated in the Course Calendar. You will not get a chance to make up assignments AFTER the hard due dates/times.

It is expected that ALL assignments be completed by the soft due date/time. Although, your grade will not suffer if you don't do so. Soft due dates keep you on task and discourage procrastination. Also, if for some reason you cannot complete your assignments during the hard-due-date period, your non-compliance with the soft due dates/times will be used by the instructor as justification not to grant make-ups.

12. COURSE POLICY ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKEUP WORK

Some of the top job skills that will help individuals succeed in any industry are multitasking and professionalism. Multitasking includes the ability to focus on one task without neglecting your other duties. Professionalism includes timeliness, politeness, and organization among many other habits and attitudes. Being professional requires individuals to self-motivate and hold themselves accountable for their actions without needing oversight from a manager. Professionalism can be a good indicator that an employee will perform well at their job, so it is a necessary skill for anyone looking to succeed in their career, regardless of their field of work. Therefore, many professors feel that course grades should also reflect students’ professionalism and multitasking skills.

Consequently, the following policy on late assignments and makeup assignments pertains to this course. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!

NO late assignments and NO make-up assignments will be allowed AFTER the due dates as stated in the Course Calendar! After the due date, you will be given a grade of 0% for missed assignments.

a. Grading Scale

Following is the grading scale used by the instructor for all assignments and the course grade:

     b. Course Grade Calculation

It is expected that you know how to calculate your course grade at any given time during the semester. The MOM Gradebook will also show your course grade. 

0.50 (Exams Avg) + 0.20 (Quiz Point Avg) + 0.20 (Practice Task Point Avg) + 0.10 (Capstone Grade)

14. ATTENDANCE POLICY

In online courses "attendance" means that you should access the MOM course daily, if anything just to read new messages in the MOM forums and the MOM "Messages" feature. You will get a notification on your myMOM page when new messages and posts are available. You are responsible for any grade ramifications if you do not attend the course.

15. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

You are expected to complete your own work in this class. Cheating on exams or lab exercises is not fair to students who are honestly studying. Cheating is also subject to penalties, which can include getting a zero for the exam or lab exercise or failing the course. The full list of possible penalties is listed in the CSN Student Academic Integrity Policy. You must familiarize yourself with this policy.

Practice Tasks: If it can be proven that someone else completed one or more practice tasks for you, you will get a 0% for those assignments. While tutors may explain math concepts to you, they are NOT allowed to work individual problems for you.

Quizzes and Exams: If it can be proven that someone else completed one or more quizzes and/or exams for you, you will get a 0% for those assessments. Additionally, if it can be proven that you used outside resources on the exams (textbook, instructor notes, your notes, Web sites, etc.), you will also get a 0%!
