MATH 124E with MATH 24 - SECTION 1205 - COLLEGE ALGEBRA EXPANDED

2. COURSE CALENDAR

You can find the Course Calendar at http://profstewartmath.com/Cal_124EWR_Fall.pdf and also on the home page of MyOpenMath (MOM) which will be discussed in paragraph 7a below. It allows you to quickly check assignment availability and due dates.

3. ABOUT THIS COURSE

Math 124E courses were designed by the Nevada System of Higher Education for students who are not meeting the prerequisites for Math 124. Math 124E is a 5-credit hour course which, together with Math 24, provides the remediation necessary so that you can successfully complete your mathematics requirements.

Math 124E courses can either be taken in a campus classroom or in a "Web-remote" environment which means it will be taken at home via a software-based conference room. Math 124E courses are not available in a purely online format!

You have elected to take Math 124E in a "Web-remote" environment, that is, you are taking it at home via a software-based conference room. Specifically, in this Web-remote course you will receive LIVE instructions via Zoom at the same time two times a week. Zoom is a free-of-charge. Paragraph 7b below tells you how to access it.

However, some lectures are video recorded. This is due to the downright overwhelming number of concepts that are supposed to be covered in this course. The video recorded lectures allow you to either take a "breather" after a hard live lecture or to continue learning additional material. But fear not, the video recorded concepts will be discussed at the beginning of the next live Zoom classroom session!

In this Web-remote course you are not allowed to do whatever you want. Successful web-remote courses have structure and purpose. You must adhere to deadlines and due dates just like in an on-campus course. 

In this Web-remote course you must have the appropriate technology and be tech-savvy. It is ENTIRELY UP TO THE STUDENTS to have this under control. Technical difficulties cannot be used as an excuse for failure to complete assignments. This course makes extensive use of multiple forms of media and requires specific software and hardware components. See paragraph 7 below. Access to a desktop or laptop computer and a fast internet connection is essential.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Math 124Extended

This course is equivalent to Math 124 and requires students to be concurrently enrolled in a co-requisite section of MATH 24. Practical applications are the focal point of this course. Topics include equations and inequalities; linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs; solutions of systems of linear equations; matrices; and sequences and series. Prerequisite: A satisfactory ACT/SAT/Placement Test score; Math 96 with a grade of D or better; or grade of C or better in Math 95 or Math 95E.

NOTE: This course does NOT serve as a prerequisite for Math 127 nor is it sufficiently rigorous for entry into calculus.

7. MEDIA AND TOOLS

a. MyOpenMath (aka MOM) - Required

The free-of-charge Learning Management System called MyOpenMath or MOM will be used exclusively in this course. CANVAS and MyMathLab will NOT be used! In essence, MOM is our online classroom. It contains online textbooks, the instructor-created text-based lecture notes, assorted YouTube videos, the syllabus, the course calendar, homework assignments, exams, grades, asynchronous communication tools, and much more.

NOTE:  You should be able to access the MOM course a day before the start of the semester! Thereafter, if you are having trouble with access, e-mail your instructor immediately.

b. Zoom - Required

The free-of-charge software-based conference room called Zoom will be used for our class meeting and for contact (“office”) hours. Download the "Zoom Client for Meetings" at https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting.

c. Laptop or Standalone Computer - Required

Please note, that the applications we use DO NOT WORK with Chromebooks, Mobile Devices, Tablets/iPads, Linux/Unix OS, or MS Surface RT. If necessary, YOU MUST make arrangements to take your exams and complete assignments on a laptop or standalone computer.

d. Google Chrome - Required

The best browser to use is Google Chrome even for Mac users. Most application we use do not always work together well with other browsers.

e. Wired Internet Connection - Optional, but highly recommended!

You may experience difficulties in the stability of your Internet connection, even with the best wireless connection. The extra load of the MOM software might slow things down and might make it difficult for images and charts to load. If you do not have an Ethernet cable buy one and learn how to use your Internet connection with it.

f. Webcam and Microphone - Required

You must have access to a Webcam (stand-alone or build into our computer) and a microphone so that you can receive LIVE Zoom instructions.

g. Scanning Capability - Required

You must have a scanner or a cell phone scanner app (e.g., Adobe Scan) to send some required work to the instructor. See paragraph #9c below. You must know how to operate the hardware/softeware.

h. Calculator - Required

A calculator is necessary in this course! Be sure to use one with "forward logic". The TI 30X IIB or IIS or the TI 30XS Multiview scientific calculators are recommended. You can use it for the practice tasks, the Capstone Task, the quizzes, and the exams. Use the same calculator for all your work! Using a new calculator on an exam could be disastrous!

NOTE: On the exams you cannot use a computer, phone, or online calculator!

i. Instructor Lecture Notes - Required

The instructor lecture notes can be found in MOM. The MOM course is divided into four (4) modules of four weeks each. Every week contains several folders each containing a "Learning Materials" link. There you will find written instructor notes explaining the concepts.

j. YouTube Videos - Optional

Under the "Learning Materials" links you can also find YouTube videos recorded by various mathematics instructors from other institutions showing more examples of how to work problems.

k. Hardcover Textbook - Optional

You do not have to purchase a hardcover textbook. You can find eText links under each "Learning Materials" link in the MOM Tasks Folders. These eTexts were written by various other mathematics instructors from other institutions. ONLY if you are not satisfied with the instructor's notes should you consult the eTexts.

NOTE: The eTexts contain a huge amount of materials and not everything pertains to this course. The instructor lecture notes will tell you what to concentrate on and what to ignore. Please understand that the formulas and solution paths in the eTexts might be slightly different from the ones in the instructor lecture notes. This is the nature of mathematics, and these differences teach you critical thinking skills.

8. COMMUNICATION AND COURSE HELP

The instructor will communicate in several different ways.

You can discuss NON-MATH RELATED ISSUES (technology; share your concerns; report typos) in two different ways. The instructor will respond within 24 hours during the week and 48 hours over the weekend.

9. ASSIGNMENTS

There are four types of assignments in this course, namely (a) Autobiography Task; (b) Reviews; (c) Exams; and (d) Practice Tasks. You can find their starting dates and their due dates in the Course Calendar. See paragraph #2 above.

a. Autobiography Task - Not Graded

The autobiography task allows you to access the syllabus review which in turn allows you to access the rest of the course. It requires you to introduce yourself to the class on a MOM bulletin board called “Autobiography Forum”. You will find more information in the "Preliminaries" tasks folder in the MOM course.

b. Reviews - Not Graded

There are four (4) module reviews and one (1) syllabus review. The module reviews let you know what types of problems to expect on the exam! You can find them in MyOpenMath in Tasks Folders 3, 7, 11, and 15.

WARNING: If you want to take advantage of this review, you must have earned at least a 75% on the previous practice task before you can access it.

The syllabus review allows you to access the rest of the course. However, it is protected by a password which will be given to you by the instructor in the response to your autobiography posting. You can find it in MyOpenMath in the "Preliminaries" folder.

c. Exams - Graded

There are four (4) exams called Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3, and Exam 4. The average of all exam grades counts for 50% of your course grade. The exams are given on certain Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the semester. See Course Calendar in paragraph 2 above. You can find the exams in MyOpenMath in Tasks Folders 4, 8, 12, and 16.

d. Practice Tasks - Graded

There are forty-two (42) Practice Tasks. The average of all Practice Task grades counts for 50% of your course grade.

They are concept-related and prepare you for the exams. You can find them in MyOpenMath in Tasks Folders 1-3, 5-7, 9-11, and 13-15. For soft and hard due dates, see Course Calendar in paragraph 2 above.

Practice 1 requires a 100% on the syllabus review.

Thereafter, you must achieve at least a 75% on the previous practice task before you can access the next practice task.

Practices 6PRE, 12PRE, and 18PRE require you to complete the previous exam with at least a 1%.

10. EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

NO extra credit assignments are available.

11. DUE DATES

All assignments have soft and hard due dates and times. See Course Calendar. It is expected that you complete ALL assignments by the soft due date and time.

Unfortunately, MyOpenMath can only show hard due dates and times. They are to be used in dire emergency situations only. The instructor must be notified of this immediately. She will be the judge of what constitutes a dire emergency!

If you decide to complete the assignments during the hard due date/time period solely because you can or you did not notify the instructor of your dire emergency, and something happens in your life that then prevents you from completing the assignment, you will get the grade of 0. You will not get a chance to make up assignments AFTER the hard due dates and times.

12. COURSE POLICY ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKEUP WORK

Some of the top job skills that will help individuals succeed in any industry are multitasking and professionalism. Multitasking includes the ability to focus on one task without neglecting your other duties. Professionalism includes timeliness, politeness, and organization among many other habits and attitudes. Being professional requires individuals to self-motivate and hold themselves accountable for their actions without needing oversight from a manager. Professionalism can be a good indicator that an employee will perform well at their job, so it is a necessary skill for anyone looking to succeed in their career, regardless of their field of work. Therefore, many professors feel that course grades should also reflect students’ professionalism and multitasking skills.

Consequently, the following policy on late assignments and makeup assignments pertains to this course. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!

NO late assignments and NO make-up assignments will be allowed AFTER the due dates as stated in the Course Calendar! After the due date, you will be given a grade of 0% for missed assignments.

13. GRADING

a. Grading Scale

Following is the grading scale used by the instructor for ALL assignments and for the course grade in Math 124E:

100 - 93 A       92 - 90 A-    

  89 - 83 B       82 - 80 B-    

  79 - 73 C       72 - 70 C-     

  69 - 63 D       62 - 60 D-    

  59 -   0 F

     b. Course Grade Calculation in Math 24

In Math 24, a Pass/Fail course grade must be given. If you earn an "F" grade in Math 124E, you will get a "Fail" grade in Math 24 otherwise you will get a "Pass" grade.

     c. Course Grade Calculation in Math 124E

It is expected that you know how to calculate your course grade at any given time during the semester. The MOM Gradebook will also show your course grade. 

0.50 (Exam Avg) + 0.50 (Practice Task Avg)

14. ATTENDANCE POLICY

In web-remote courses "attendance" means that you should attend the Zoom classroom at the regular scheduled time. You should also access the MOM course daily, if anything just to read new messages in the MOM forums and the MOM Message feature. You will get a notification on your myMOM page below the course access link when new messages are available. You are responsible for any grade ramifications if you do not attend the course as described.

15. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

You are expected to complete your own work in this class. Cheating on exams or lab exercises is not fair to students who are honestly studying. Cheating is also subject to penalties, which can include getting a zero for the exam or lab exercise or failing the course. The full list of possible penalties is listed in the CSN Student Academic Integrity Policy. You must familiarize yourself with this policy.

Practice Tasks: If it can be proven that someone else completed a practice tasks for you, you will get a 0%. While tutors may explain math concepts to you, they are NOT allowed to work individual problems for you.

Exams: If it can be proven that someone else completed an exam for you, you will get a 0%. Additionally, if it can be proven that you used outside resources on the exams (textbook, instructor notes, your notes, Web sites, etc.), you will also get a 0%!

Health Directive: Students must follow all active CSN health directives while enrolled in this class. CSN public health directives pertaining to the corona viruses are found at COVID19.
